Turkey slams attack on former Greek PM

Ankara 'strongly condemns' letter bomb which targeted former Greek premier Lucas Papademos in Athens on Thursday

By Ugur Cil

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey on Friday said it “strongly condemned” Thursday’s letter bomb attack on former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos in Athens.

Papademos, who served as an independent interim prime minister between November 2011 and May 2012, was injured in an explosion on Thursday afternoon, after opening a booby-trapped envelope while riding in his car.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack against Mr. Papademos,” Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a written statement.

“Turkey will continue its resolute stance against all kinds of terrorism, irrespective of its origin or goal and in this context pursue its cooperation with Greece,” it added.

No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, however similar packages were sent in past months to Greek and European officials by a violent ultra-left group known as the Conspiracy of the Fire Nuclei.
