Turkey's parliament opens Saturday

Summer recess ends as MPs expected to discuss extending Turkish military presence in Syria, Iraq

ANKARA (AA) - The Turkish parliament is set to open Saturday to start its second legislative session.

The parliament, which has been on summer recess since August 20, will convene at 3 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) under the leadership of Speaker Ismail Kahraman.

After an opening speech by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the general assembly will discuss the extension of Turkish military presence in Syria and Iraq.

A mandate was given to Turkish Armed Forces by the parliament in 2014, which was extended for another year in September 2015. The mandate is expected to be extended for another 12 months.

There will also be a reception at 7 p.m. (1600 GMT).
