HATAY, Turkey (AA) – An Istanbul-based aid agency has distributed fast-breaking meals to 1 million Syrians since the start of Ramadan, according to an official on Tuesday.

Selim Tosun, Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) media advisor in Syria, said the agency's aid to families in need in Idlib, Hama, Aleppo, and Latakia has been continuing during Ramadan.

“We’ve distributed meals to 1 million Syrians in the first 20 days of Ramadan for iftar [fast-breaking dinner],” he said.

The IHH cooks the meals in mobile kitchens and food banks in Syria.

The agency also provided food packages and clothing to war-weary Syrian families, the agency’s official added.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. It is a time of self-examination and increased religious devotion.

Throughout the course of the fasting month, Muslims are urged to perform extra prayers, recite the Quran, give to the poor and refrain from misbehavior.
