KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Turkish construction company Polat Yol Yapi on Thursday donated four water wells it drilled in eastern and northern parts of Uganda to address recurring shortages of safe and clean water in the area.

The initiative benefits more than 100 households that have been traveling long distances and paying exorbitant prices to obtain clean water in the districts of Bulambuli, Kween and Nakapiripirit.

The Turkish company has a civil works contract to upgrade a 92-kilometer (57-mile) road that will link Uganda to neighboring Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The company’s project manager, Edip Yenen, said Polat Yol Yapi’s donation of the water wells is a symbol of its commitment to building stronger relationships with the Ugandan community.

“It is an opportunity for us to reach out to fellow human beings with kindness and generosity, deepen our engagement and learn from each other,” he said.

Turkish contractors have gained a foothold in Uganda, carrying out major infrastructure developments.

The Engineering News-Record (ENR), an authoritative publication on the construction industry, published a list ranking the top 250 international contractors, and nearly one-fifth of them are Turkish. Türkiye ranked second in terms of overall representation on the list and seventh based on total revenues.
