BANJUL, Gambia (AA) - A Turkish energy company operating in Gambia on Thursday provided food aid to 200 Gambian families and three boarding schools.

In a ceremony at its headquarters, Karpowership donated 150 bags of rice and sugar each to needy families, ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Today is exactly one year since the Turkish company started operations in Gambia, supplying country's energy company with 36 megawatts of energy.

The donation was part of the power production company's initiative to support the poor, needy and underprivileged in the society, said Yankuba Mamburay, country director of Karpowership.

Karpowership made a similar donation in Ramadan last year, Mamburay added.

Last month, the company also donated food items to three orphanages in the country.

The company donated 90 bags of rice, 15 bags of onion, 15 cooking oil containers of 40 liters each and loaves of bread to the orphanages.

The company is also currently renovating the pediatric unit of the country’s main hospital, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital.

“This is our way of giving back to the Gambian people through our corporate social responsibility,” Mamburay said.
