'Culture of tolerance in Hatay sets example for entire world,' says governor of Hatay, marking Feasts of St. Peter, Paul

HATAY, Turkey (AA) – A Turkish leader on Friday expressed best wishes to local Christians on a feast day for two of the faith’s holiest saints.

“We build a happier future together with our people from different beliefs and cultures," Rahmi Dogan, governor of the southern Hatay province, said in a message marking the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which falls on Saturday, June 29.

Dogan voiced his wishes for world peace, adding: “The culture of tolerance in Hatay sets an example for the entire world.”

The holy day commemorates the martyrdom of St. Paul, who spread the gospel of Jesus, and St. Peter, the first pope.

Hatay has been home to many civilizations throughout its centuries-long history, said Dogan.

Hatay is a region “where different beliefs and cultures are experienced with mutual respect, love, and tolerance,” he added.

The holiday, observed among both Catholics and Orthodox Christians, is celebrated at the St. Pierre Church, located on the outskirts of Mt. Habib Neccar in Hatay.
