ANKARA (AA) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has continued to receive congratulatory messages from world leaders following his reelection.

The Turkish Communications Directorate said Wednesday that among the leaders who congratulated Erdogan were Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, the head of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Barzani, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

All of the leaders expressed their wishes for the election results to be auspicious for the Turkish people in phone conversations, the directorate said on Twitter.

Türkiye went to the polls on Sunday for a presidential runoff election after no candidate secured more than 50% of the vote needed for an outright victory in the first round on May 14.

Erdogan won with more than 52% of the vote, while opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu received over 47%, according to unofficial results.
