ISTANBUL (AA) - A Turkish prosecutor demanded prison time of up to 15 years Tuesday for the license holder of a FETO terror group-linked app.

Alpaslan Demir, who is known in the US as David Keynes, developed the terror group-linked encrypted messaging app, ByLock, which it used from 2014 to March 2016 to ensure confidential communication among its members.

Keynes, who was released after being jailed, and his lawyers Abdurrahman Bayramoglu and Refik Caglar Dilber attended the hearing at the Istanbul 29th High Criminal Court.

The prosecutor demanded that Keynes be imprisoned from seven-and-a-half to 15 years for “being a member of an armed terror group” and that he would benefit from an effective remorse law.

David Keynes admitted during the hearing that he was a member of FETO, “which destroyed Türkiye for 40 years.”

“I regret that. I think I showed this regret by coming to Türkiye and surrendering. I request that the announcement of the verdict about me be deferred when the conditions are met.”

Bayramoglu said the effective repentance laws are for bringing down terror groups.

Keynes was revealed to be a Turkish citizen named Alpaslan Demir, who later was granted American citizenship when he contacted Turkish authorities through his lawyer and declared his intention to turn himself in and confess.

His lawyers submitted a petition in March 4 to judicial authorities in Istanbul.

Keynes was jailed June 9 after arriving at an Istanbul airport and testifying before a court.

He admitted that he holds the copyright to ByLock but later claimed that his credit card and identification were used by FETO members without his knowledge.

FETO orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, in Türkiye, in which 251 people were killed and 2,734 injured.

Ankara accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions; particularly the military, police and judiciary.
