BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AA) - Turkish schools in Kyrgyzstan provided humanitarian aid to Türkiye after the country’s southern regions were jolted by two powerful quakes last week.

“In a week, more than seven tons of clothing, food, generators, and blankets, which constitute in-kind aid, were collected,” the educational counselor at the Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, Kursat Dulkadir, told Anadolu.

Dulkadir further said that approximately $185,000 were also deposited into the account opened by the embassy following the earthquakes.

Noting that teachers, parents, and trainees participated in the aid efforts for earthquake victims, Dulkadir said that efforts continue in several schools affiliated with Türkiye.

Separately, the head of the Kyrgyz-Turkish Anatolian Vocational High School for Girls, Adil Gezer, told Anadolu that students and teachers sewed nearly 700 blankets in three days and delivered them to the Turkish Embassy.

Gezer also said that students left notes on the blankets which expressed condolences and messages in support of the victims of the earthquakes.

Meanwhile, head of the Bishkek Turkish School, Ilkur Yenal, noted that parents, teachers, and students are doing their best to provide assistance to the quake victims.

“We donated baby clothes, sleeping bags, blankets, winter coats and shoes, a generator, 18 projectors, and one ton of lentils. We also gave 450 kilograms (992 pounds) of fabric to the Anatolian Vocational High School for Girls to sew blankets,” Yenal said.

On Feb. 6, two massive earthquakes struck southern Türkiye.

The magnitude 7.6 and 7.7 tremors were centered in Kahramanmaras and hit nine other provinces – Hatay, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Malatya, Adana, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

They also hit several countries and caused widespread destruction in northern Syria.

More than 31,900 people were killed in Türkiye, according to the latest official figures, while the death toll topped 3,600 in Syria.
