ANKARA (AA) – Türkiye has deported over 19,000 irregular migrants since the beginning of 2023, authorities said on Tuesday.

The Presidency of Migration Management said in a statement that a total of 19,405 migrants with various nationalities have been deported so far this year as part of efforts to combat irregular migration.

As many as 544 Afghan migrants were deported with four charter flights between March 1-6.

Since this year started, 6,450 foreigners have been sent back to Afghanistan, the migration body also said.

Last year, a total of 124,441 irregular migrants were deported with 237 charter flights, including 235 to Afghanistan and two to Pakistan, as well as several other scheduled flights.

Türkiye has been a key transit point for irregular migrants seeking to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.
