Turkiye hosts 1.3M foreign tourists in January

Jumping 151% compared to last year, figure still down 28% from January 2020 level, ministry data shows

ANKARA (AA) - The number of foreigners visiting Turkiye reached some 1.3 million in January, according to the Culture and Tourism Ministry on Friday.

Despite posting a year-on-year surge of 151%, the figure was 28% down from January 2020, before coronavirus related restrictions were imposed worldwide, the ministry data showed.

Istanbul, Turkiye's largest city by population and a top tourist draw, attracted some 62% of all foreign visitors, or 791,578, this January.

It was followed by Edirne in northwestern Turkiye, which borders both Bulgaria and Greece, and the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya with 148,016 and 117,801 foreign visitors, respectively.

Russians topped the list of visitors by country with 134,215, followed by Bulgarians with 109,971, Iranians with 106,957.
