ISTANBUL (AA) – The top diplomats of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the US underlined on Friday the importance of reaching an immediate and “unconditional” ceasefire in Sudan, welcoming President Donald Trump’s announcement that he intends to step in to help end the crisis.

The UAE Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio by phone to review the “tragic developments of the civil war in Sudan and reaffirmed the importance of achieving an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.”

During the call, bin Zayed welcomed President Trump’s statements “calling for an end to the horrific atrocities committed against civilians during the civil war which has been ongoing for over two years and his leading efforts aimed at achieving stability in Sudan.”

On Wednesday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the US would work with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and other Middle Eastern partners to end “tremendous atrocities are taking place in Sudan.”

His comments followed a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who urged Trump to help resolve the Sudan crisis.

Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has deepened since April 2023, when the Sudanese army and the RSF engaged in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
