Uganda bans foreign travel for ministers, legislators

Country also suspends plans for salary enhancement for government workers till financial year of 2024-2025

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Uganda has banned foreign travel for ministers, members of parliament and other public servants due to financial constraints.

Other expenditures that the government regarded as not very urgent have also been put on halt.

According to the Secretary to the Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi, the decision has been communicated to all accounting officers of government entities.

In an interview with Anadolu, Ggoobi said the government has not got enough money to spend on the national budget because a good portion of the money is spent on debt payment and the funds available for various activities have tremendously reduced.

"Spending on travel abroad shall be restricted to only the President, Vice president, speaker of parliament, deputy speaker of parliament, chief justice, the deputy chief justice, prime minister, principal judge, critical travel for security, arbitration of government cases and resource mobilization," said Ggoobi.

He said that for the same reason, the government has suspended plans for salary enhancement for government workers till the financial year of 2024-2025.

Ggoobi said expenditure on workshops and seminars has been reduced by 50% depending on the importance of occasion. The government has also frozen purchasing of new vehicles for government departments with exception of ambulances and vehicles for medical supplies, agricultural extension services and security.

Ggoobi also said that there will not be new borrowing next financial year and such will continue until when the state of the economy improves.
