KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Schools in Uganda reopened on Monday after being closed for almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reopening caused traffic congestion on main roads in the country.

According to the Education Ministry, more than 8 million primary school students and over 4 million students in secondary and vocational institutes returned to schools across the country.

“I am happy because my children have gone back to school today,” said Hassan Kisitu, father of four children.

The East African country had shut down its schools in March 2020, shortly after the first coronavirus case was confirmed on the African continent.

Uganda has so far reported 153,762 COVID-19 cases, including 3,339 deaths, according to the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
