UK condemns Hong Kong's additional arrest warrants for overseas activists

LONDON (AA) - Britain condemned the additional arrest warrants issued Friday by Hong Kong for individuals living in the UK as an "example of transnational repression."

Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said in a statement that the move encourages "reckless behaviour" on UK soil and damages Hong Kong’s international reputation.

"The UK strongly opposes the National Security Law, which has eroded the rights and freedoms of Hong Kongers," said the statement that urges Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to end the "deliberate targeting" of opposition voices in the UK and elsewhere.

It added that the UK will continue to stand with the people of Hong Kong, including those who have made the UK their home.

Early Friday, Hong Kong’s national security police announced arrest warrants for 19 activists based overseas, accusing them of subversion under a stringent national security law. It also offered bounties for 15 of the activists.
