UK man pleads guilty to terrorism charges

Jabed Hussain was caught by Turkish authorities on Syrian border in 2015 before being returned to UK

LONDON (AA) – A man caught by the Turkish authorities on the Syrian border and returned to the U.K. is facing jail after pleading guilty to terrorism offences at a court in London on Thursday.

Jabed Hussain, 22, accepted two charges of preparation of terrorist acts in 2015 and 2016 during a hearing.

Prosecutors said he attempted to travel to Syria in August 2015 with a view to joining Daesh, but was detained by Turkish border guards before he crossed the frontier.

The London-based Metropolitan Police said he tried to change his name after returning to the U.K. in an attempt to evade the authorities, but was arrested on May 28.

Police commander Dean Haydon said in a statement: “Hussain made a concerted effort to get to Syria and intended to join ISIS [Daesh].

“Changing his name was a poor attempt to evade the authorities which was always destined to fail.”

The judge warned Hussain he would be sentenced on Dec. 16 and that a prison term was “inevitable”.
