UK maritime authority warns of rising tensions in Gulf region, urges ships to exercise caution

Vessels advised to stay alert in Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Strait of Hormuz amid risk of military escalation

By Beyza Binnur Donmez

GENEVA (AA) - The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on Wednesday issued a warning to mariners operating in the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Strait of Hormuz, citing heightened regional tensions that could affect commercial shipping.

In a statement, UKMTO said it "has been made aware of increased tensions within the region which could lead to an escalation of military activity having a direct impact on mariners."

Vessels transiting the area are advised "to transit the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Straits of Hormuz with caution and to report incidents or suspicious activity to UKMTO law (Best Management Practice) BMP."

The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, has been a focal point of naval incidents and geopolitical friction in recent years, particularly involving Iran, Western powers, and regional allies.

UKMTO, which operates under the Royal Navy's Maritime Trade Information Centre, plays a central role in coordinating communication between merchant vessels and military forces in high-risk maritime regions.
