UK: Minute of silence held for Finsbury Park victims

People across UK pay respects to anti-Muslim terror attack victims

By Ahmet Gurhan Kartal

LONDON (AA) – A minute of silence was observed Monday to remember the victims of last week’s anti-Muslim terror attack in north London’s Finsbury Park.

People across the U.K. stood still at noon to pay their respects to the victims of the attack that killed one Muslim worshipper and injured 11 others when a van plowed into a group of people after they left Ramadan prayers at the Muslim Welfare Centre in Finsbury Park.

Makram Ali, 51, was killed in the incident and a post-mortem suggested the cause of death was multiple injuries.

Ali moved to the U.K. from Bangladesh aged 10 and was married with four daughters and two sons.

Darren Osborne, 47, is alleged to have driven the van into a crowd of Muslim worshippers outside an Islamic center in north London.

"He is since charged with terrorism-related murder as well as attempted murder following the incident in Finsbury Park in the early hours of Monday 19 June,” the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Eyewitness Abdulraman Aidroos told Anadolu Agency a “white British man” had shouted “I am going to kill Muslims”.

Prime Minister Theresa May described the attack as “sickening” and “insidious and destructive to our values and our way of life”.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old woman who was arrested Sunday for allegedly running into Muslim worshippers with her car while they were leaving for an Eid al-Fitr gathering in a sports center in Manchester, was released Monday on bail.

At least six people, including three minors, were injured during the incident, which police said was not treated as a terror-related one.
