LONDON (AA) - The UK announced fresh sanctions Monday against Myanmar, targeting suppliers of materials including military equipment to the junta which seized power in February 2021.

"New UK sanctions will target those who supply the Myanmar regime with materials, including military equipment, which are still being used to attack its civilians," said a statement by the Foreign Office.

It added that sanctions which target enablers of "air force bombing campaigns against the civilian population” were imposed on the occasion of Myanmar Armed Forces Day.

"Those sanctioned today include a company and its director who supply the Myanmar Air Forces with aviation fuel and a second individual who is the director of a company which supplies restricted goods and technology through its business," it added.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the minister of state for the Indo-Pacific, said the UK condemns the military’s "increasingly brutal campaign" against the Myanmar people.

"The sanctions announced today are designed to reduce the military’s access to fuel and military equipment," she added.

On Feb. 1, 2021, the Myanmar military overthrew the democratically-elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

Monday's sanctions mark the 15th round of targeted sanctions by the UK against the military regime in Myanmar, according to the Foreign Office.
