Ukraine imposes sanctions against Russian media

Extended list of sanctions also includes more than 1,200 people, presidential office says

KIEV (AA) - Ukraine has imposed sanctions against a number of Russian media outlets and social networking websites, the presidential office said Tuesday.

The decree signed by President Petro Poroshenko consists of 1,228 people and 468 legal entities, according to a statement published online.

With this decree, Kiev banned access to Russia's search engine Yandex, social media sites Vkontakte and Odnoklassnik, and also a number of Russia's state and private TV channels.

The relations between Kiev and Moscow became tight after Russia annexed Crimea following an illegal independence vote in 2014.

Along with the EU, Ukraine first introduced sanctions against Russia in March 2014. They aim to put pressure on Moscow to implement the Minsk Agreement in Ukraine and work towards a de-escalation in the country.
