Ukraine says 1 killed, 4 injured in Russian missile strike on Kyiv

ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine said on Wednesday that at least one person was killed and four others injured in an overnight Russian missile attack on the capital Kyiv.

“A Kyiv resident born in 1985 died as a result of the enemy attack. Four residents of the capital were also injured. Among them is a nine-year-old child,” Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said on Telegram.

Tkachenko said the attack caused damage to residential buildings, an office building, and non-residential infrastructure in five districts of Kyiv.

He said the fires as a result of the attack were extinguished or localized as of 10 a.m. (0800GMT) and the injured were receiving treatment.

“This is a dangerous weapon that is not easy to eliminate. And even falling debris can cause serious destruction,” Tkachenko said, citing claims by Ukraine’s Air Force that air defenses downed six Iskander-M ballistic missiles heading for Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused his Russian counterpart of “not preparing for peace,” arguing that only “strong actions and pressure” on Russia can put an end to such strikes.

“Right now, we need the unity and support of all our partners in the fight for a just end to this war,” Zelenskyy said on X.

Russian authorities did not immediately comment on the attack.
