ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine's former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal held on Wednesday a high-level meeting with US envoy Keith Kellogg, focusing on defense cooperation, tougher sanctions on Russia, and the prospects for peace.

Shmyhal, who resigned on Tuesday as part of a major government reshuffle, expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for approving the delivery of Patriot missile systems to NATO allies, calling the move a life-saving decision.

“We’re committed to deeper defense cooperation with the US: from air defense to joint weapons production,” Shmyhal said on X.

He said the two sides discussed enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities and tightening sanctions on Moscow, which he referred to as the “Russian aggressor.”

The Ukrainian former premier also thanked Kellogg for his “personal contribution and support” to Ukraine’s efforts, reiterating Kyiv’s hope for US leadership in securing a just and lasting peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday he submitted documents to parliament to appoint Shmyhal as the new defense minister.

Earlier in the day, the parliament approved the resignation Shmyhal from the position of prime minister along with his entire government.

Trump earlier said Patriot missile systems for Ukraine are “already being shipped” from Germany under a NATO-backed deal in which the US will be fully reimbursed.

At a Monday meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office, Trump expressed frustration with Russia regarding the lack of progress in Ukraine peace efforts.

Trump threatened to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia if a peace deal isn't reached within 50 days.
