Ukrainian capital announces 36-hour curfew

Decision made by military command, says Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko

ANKARA (AA) – The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv announced Tuesday that a 36-hour curfew will be imposed in the city.

The curfew, a decision of the military command, will start Tuesday at 8 p.m. local time and will last until 7 a.m. (Thursday), Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

He said the city is passing through difficult times as Russian forces try to encircle it and urged residents to stay at home for two days or go to shelters when sirens are heard.

“Movement around Kyiv without special permits is forbidden. It is only allowed to go outside with the aim to get to the shelters,” he added.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial sanctions on Moscow and spurred an exodus of global firms from Russia.

At least 636 civilians have been killed and 1,125 injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war. More than 3 million refugees have fled to neighboring countries, according to UN estimates.
