UN: 1,900 tons of food to feed 730,000 for one month looted in Sudan

WASHINGTON (AA) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned the looting of UN facilities and supplies in Sudan, a day after a World Food Programme facility was also attacked in El Fasher, Darfur.

"Over 1,900 metric tons of food commodities that were meant to feed 730,000 vulnerable people for a month were looted," said Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for Guterres, in a statement.

The food supplies were gifted to the Sudanese authorities for civilian use.

"The Secretary-General regrets the loss of aid and other equipment and supplies intended for the benefit of Darfur communities," said Dujarric.

Guterres also called on the Sudanese government to restore order.

"The Secretary-General further calls upon the Sudanese authorities to facilitate the safe working environment and passage for remaining United Nations operations in El Fasher," said Dujarric.
