HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday strongly condemned a weekend attack on Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay in the capital Bogota.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres expressed concern over the incident and called for accountability.
"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attempt on the life of Miguel Uribe Turbay, the Colombian presidential candidate, in Bogota on 7 June," said Haq.
Conveying support to Uribe Turbay and to the people of Colombia, Guterres hoped for his full recovery.
Noting the importance of justice and democratic integrity ahead of the elections, the statement said: "This deplorable act of political violence must be fully investigated and those responsible brought to justice."
"The coming elections (next year) present an opportunity for Colombians to further strengthen their democracy through a peaceful electoral process," it added.
