UN condemns attack on Turkish House, urges local authorities to find those responsible

UNITED NATIONS (AA) - The UN on Monday condemned the attack on the Turkish diplomatic headquarters in New York and called for an investigation.

''We condemn that attack on Turkish House in New York today and very much hope the local authorities will find those responsible, '' UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told Anadolu.

The Turkish House in New York, a dedicated building for diplomatic missions and cultural events which opened in 2021, right across from the UN, was attacked in the early hours of Monday.

The assailant smashed the windows of the building at 3.14 a.m. local time, Turkish Consul General in New York Reyhan Ozgur told Anadolu.

Ozgur said that no one was hurt but 12 windows and the doors of the building were damaged.

He said the assailant, who has yet to be identified, left a crowbar at the scene.

The building was cordoned off by the New York Police Department and an investigation is ongoing,

Türkiye expects US authorities to find the “terrorist” who attacked the Turkish House in New York, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.

Türkiye expects immediate identification of the perpetrators of the attack on the Turkish House, the Turkish foreign minister added.

''Today, a heinous attack was carried out against #TurkishHouse in New York,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Twitter.

“We expect the US to immediately identify the perpetrators & provide necessary protection to ensure the safety of our diplomatic missions,'' he added.

''My thoughts are with my colleagues working relentlessly abroad for Türkiye, including this election period,'' Cavusoglu said.
