UN Security Council adopts draft resolution on appointing senior envoy for Iraq, Kuwait
15 members vote in favor of UK-drafted resolution to support cooperation between Iraq, Kuwait on repatriation, return of missing persons and property

HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing the appointment of a senior envoy to support cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait on the repatriation and return of missing persons and property.
All 15 Council members voted in favor of the text, which the UK drafted, the penholder on the Iraq-Kuwait file.
The resolution requests UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint a senior representative "mandated to support continued cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait on the repatriation or return of all Kuwaiti and third-country nationals or their remains, as well as the return of Kuwaiti property."
The issue of missing persons and stolen property dates back to Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. While significant progress has been made over the years, both countries have continued to work with the UN on unresolved cases.
