UN sounds alarm over humanitarian crisis, violence in South Sudan

Aid workers, civilians being targeted, humanitarian assistance blocked with impunity, says UN coordinator

By Benjamin Takpiny

JUBA, South Sudan (AA) – Urgent collective action is needed to address the spiraling humanitarian crisis and violence against civilians and aid workers in South Sudan, the top UN official in the country said on Thursday.

South Sudan continues to be the world’s most violent country for aid workers, followed by Afghanistan and Syria, said Sara Beysolow Nyanti, UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in the country.

Speaking to reporters in the capital Juba ahead of World Humanitarian Day, marked annually on Aug. 19, she called on all armed factions in South Sudan to immediately cease targeting civilians and humanitarian personnel.

“There were 232 incidents of constraints on humanitarian access reported between Jan. 1 and July 30, while five humanitarian workers have been killed in the line of duty this year,” she said.

Since 2013, 134 aid workers have been killed in South Sudan, Nyanti added.

Nearly half of all incidents this year of humanitarian access being blocked were in the states of Jonglei and Central Equatoria, she said.

Nyanti said the insecurity and violence is “compounded by a lack of rule of law and access to justice.”

“Impunity is a perpetuating factor and a driver of conflict and insecurity. There is an urgent need to bring perpetrators to justice. We need strengthened joint action, multidimensional dialogue, and engagement to address these issues,” she said.

She lauded all humanitarian workers and people “risking their own lives to alleviate the suffering and save the lives of others” in South Sudan.

“It takes a village to raise a child. In the same way, it takes an array of partners to support crisis-affected people. We need urgent collective efforts to help the vulnerable population in South Sudan,” the UN official added.
