ANKARA (AA) - At least 18 PKK terrorists were “neutralized” in northern Iraq and northern Syria in counter-terrorism operations carried out by Turkish security forces, security officials said on Wednesday.

The operations by the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) were conducted in Gara and Metina regions, said the official on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Six terrorists were killed in northern Iraq.

Turkish forces use the term "neutralize" to indicate the terrorist in question either surrendered or was killed or captured.

In another counter-terrorism operation, the Turkish armed forces “neutralized” nine PKK terrorists in northern Syria, the National Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The terror members were targeted in the zones of Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Peace Spring, the statement added.

Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

Moreover, three more PKK terrorists were also “neutralized” by Turkish soldiers in northern Iraq as part of Operation Claw-Lock, the ministry said.

Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in April to target PKK terrorist hideouts in northern Iraq's Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions, near the Turkish border.

It was initiated after Operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle to root out terrorists hiding in northern Iraq and plotting cross-border attacks in Türkiye.

Separately, Turkish soldiers also seized a large cache of arms and ammunition belonging to the PKK terrorist group in northern Iraq as part of Operation Claw-Lock, the ministry underscored in another statement.

A Turkish soldier, Muhammed Karacam, was killed by harassing fire by the PKK terrorists in Operation Claw-Lock zone, the ministry said.

The ministry conveyed condolences to Karacam’s family, the Turkish forces and the nation.

Two Turkish soldiers were also injured in the attack and were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive necessary treatments.

PKK terrorists often hide out in northern Iraq and Syria and plot terror attacks in Türkiye, across the border.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.
