ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine said on Thursday that at least nine people were killed in an overnight Russian drone attack targeting a residential building in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy.

"The death toll has risen to nine people. For 19 hours, rescuers have been clearing rubble, retrieving bodies from under the ruins," said a statement by the Ukrainian Interior Ministry on Telegram.

Indicating that search and rescue efforts were completed, it said 13 people were injured in the attack, including an eight-year-old girl.

It added that two apartment buildings and more than 20 cars were damaged.

The Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office said on Telegram that two days of mourning were declared in the region because of the attack.

Zelenskyy, in a statement on X, condemned the attack on the residential apartment as a "horrific tragedy," urging the international community to keep the pressure on Russia.

Ukraine's Air Force claimed in a statement on Telegram that its air defenses shot down 37 out of 76 drones launched by Russia overnight in 10 regions of the country.

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attack.
