KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) – At least five people, including three suspected militants, have been killed and several others injured after a group of heavily-armed terrorists stormed the police headquarters in the southern port city of Karachi on Friday evening, officials and local media reported.

Police and paramilitary troops rushed to the police headquarters to launch an operation to neutralize the suspected militants who took positions in different portions of the five-story compound located along the city's busiest Sharae Faisal.

Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, told reporters that two suspected terrorists, a policeman, and a civilian employee have been killed in an intense exchange of firing.

While the police said that at least three terrorists have been killed, adding that the remaining attackers are using light and heavy weapons against the security forces.

At least 16 people, including police and paramilitary troops and a rescue worker, were injured in the firing.

Police claimed that a third terrorist blew himself up to avoid arrest on the fourth floor of the building.

Citing various police officials, local broadcaster Geo News reported that five to six assailants reached the compound by car, and used the rear entrance to storm the building.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told Geo News that the terrorists hurled hand grenades before entering the compound, and took positions on different floors.

Four of the five floors have been cleared, whereas intense firing was ongoing between terrorists and the security forces on the fifth floor, the police said.

Several massive explosions coupled with frequent firing rattled the entire neighborhood, with one huge blast causing a portion of the main building to collapse.

A spokesperson for the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center said that at least 10 injured have so far been brought to the hospital.

The brazen attack follows a suicide bombing at a mosque inside a police compound in northwestern Peshawar city, killing over 100 people earlier this month.
