ISTANBUL (AA) - Belgian soldiers have shot a man in central Brussels after being attacked with a bladed weapon, local media reported on Friday.

The incident took place on Emile Jacqmain Avenue around 8 p.m. local time (1800GMT).

Broadcaster VRT said at least one soldier had been lightly injured.

Belgium’s official Crisis Center said: “The military have neutralized an individual. Situation under control.”

Photos from the scene posted online showed the area sealed off, with the suspect lying on the ground.

The RBTF media outlet reported the alleged attacker was a Somali, who had been unknown to the security services. The condition of the attacker is not clear.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted: “All our support to our military. Our security services remain attentive."

Brussels has been on high alert following a series of deadly terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital.
