Conservative New Democracy party leader won snap general elections held on Sunday

ATHENS (AA) - Conservative New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis was sworn in as Greece's new prime minister on Monday.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in the presence of President Prokopios Pavlopoulos.

After meeting with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at Maximos Mansion for the ceremonial handover, Mitsotakis also announced the members of his Cabinet.

With 99.92% of the votes counted, Greece’s New Democracy won Sunday’s snap elections.

According to the Interior Ministry, New Democracy got 39.85% of votes and 158 seats in the 300-seat parliament, giving him an absolute majority to form a government of his own.

Tsipras' left-wing Syriza party came in second with 31.53% of votes and 86 seats. The Movement for Change (KINAL) got 8.10% of votes and 22 seats, the Communist KKE 5.30% of votes and 15 seats, Greek Solution 3.7% of votes and 10 seats, and Mera25 secured 3.44% of votes and 9 seats.

The Neo-Nazi, anti-immigrant Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) party got 2.95% of the votes, just under the 3% threshold needed to be represented in parliament.

The newcomers in parliament are Greek Solution and Mera25, which were founded in 2016 and 2018 respectively.

- New Cabinet named

Stelios Petsas, the new government spokesman, announced Mitsotakis' new Cabinet on Monday evening.

Prominent New Democracy lawmaker Nikos Dendias was appointed foreign minister, while Christos Staikouras was named finance minister.

Nikos Panagiotopoulos got the defense minister post, while Adonis Georgiadis took the development and investments portfolio.

Vassilis Kikilias is the new health minister.

Michalis Chrysochoidis is the public order minister, a role that he knows well as he served it under Lucas Papademos’ caretaker government in 2012 and with PASOK in 1999-2004.

Takis Theodorikakos is to lead the Interior Ministry, and Costis Hatzidakis was named energy minister.

The new Cabinet includes two female members: Niki Kerameus as education minister and Lina Mendoni as culture minister.

The new Cabinet will be sworn tomorrow at the presidential palace and will hold its first meeting on Wednesday.
