BATMAN, Turkey (AA) - A car bomb attack targeted a gendarmerie station in southeastern Turkey on Friday, killing a teacher and injuring at least one other civilian, according to security sources.

The attack in the province of Batman was carried out by the outlawed PKK terrorist organization, said the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on talking to the media.

Sources said that two PKK terrorists first opened fire on the car of the mayor of Kozluk, which was then being driven by one of his relatives. The gunfire killed a nearby 22-year-old music teacher and injured another civilian.

One of the two terrorists was then intercepted by security forces at a gendarmerie station at the entrance to Bekirhan, Kozluk.

When security forces told the terrorist to stop the car, it blew up, wounding two soldiers and a civilian.

Security forces launched a wide-ranging operation to capture the other terrorist.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015. Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of around 1,200 people, including women and children.
