KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) - At least five civilians were killed when a suicide car bomb attack rocked Gardez city in southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, the army said.
The Afghan National Army’s 203 - Thunder Corps said in a statement that five civilians got martyred and 15 others were wounded in the attack that also injured five soldiers.
Tariq Aryan, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said in a statement the attack took place near the military courts in Gardez, the capital of southeastern Paktia province, 128 kilometers (79.5 miles) away from the Afghan capital Kabul.
"This attack is carried out by the Haqqani Network and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attack is in connection with the string of attacks in Kabul's Dasht-e-Barchi and Nangarhar," he said.
Hours after the deadly assault, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group dubbed it as a response to the security forces adopting offensive posture against the insurgents in the country after a string of terrorist attacks.
On Tuesday, over 50 people, including babies and women, were killed in a Daesh/ISIS-claimed armed assault on a hospital in Kabul and a suicide attack claimed by the same group in the eastern Nangarhar province.
