WASHINGTON/ US President Donald Trump said on Monday he had a "very good" phone call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte concerning Greenland.
"I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland. As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back — On that, everyone agrees!" Trump said on Truth Social.
Later, the president shared a screenshot of what appears to be Rutte’s text message to Trump.
“Mr. President, dear Donald – what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can’t wait to see you. Yours, Mark,” Rutte said in the message, according to the screenshot.
Trump captioned the photo saying: “Thank you to Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO!”
Trump argues the US must acquire Greenland for national security reasons and to deter rivals in the Arctic. He has also threatened tariffs on European allies who opposed US control of Greenland and sent a small number of troops to the territory.
Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposal to sell the territory.
