UPDATE - Turkish stocks up at year-end close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the last business day of 2018 up 0.92 percent to close at 91,270.48 points on Monday.

Starting the day at 90,675.11 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index climbed 835.15 points from last week's close.

On Tuesday, the stock exchange market will be closed due to the New Year's Day official holiday.

The BIST 100 peaked at 91,338.37 points while its daily low was 90,323.93 points during Monday's trading.

As of daily close, the total market value of the benchmark index was around 589.7 billion Turkish liras ($112 billion), with a 2.28-billion lira ($432 million) in daily trade volume.

By market capitalization, leading listed companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.84 billion), private lender Garanti Bank ($6.35 billion), and energy company Tupras ($5.55 billion).

The highest trade volumes were recorded by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, and electrical company Gersan.

On Monday, 71 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 15 declined, and 14 were flat compared with the previous close.

Stocks of Gersan Elektrik witnessed the highest increase, up 14.61 percent, while shares of events organizer Flap Kongre Toplanti Hizmetleri showed the worst performance with a 2.21-percent drop.

One U.S. dollar traded for 5.2920 Turkish liras at daily close, while the USD/TRY exchange rate was 5.2720 by market close on Friday.

The euro/Turkish lira exchange rate was 6.0550, versus 6.0490 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.7810 Turkish liras, up from Friday's close of 6.7060.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,280.00 by market close, compared with $1,278.20 at the previous close.

Hovering between $53.22 and $54.83 during the day, the price of Brent oil was around $53.32 per barrel as of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT) on Monday.
