GENEVA / ISTANBUL (AA) - The UK has temporarily withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Iran and Tel Aviv due to the security situation, while continuing to advise its citizens against all travel to the region, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said Friday.

British officials, in a statement on Friday, announced that their staff have been temporarily withdrawn from Iran and reaffirmed the embassy in Tehran will continue operating remotely following the move, which comes amid heightened regional tensions.

They also announced later in the day that they temporarily moved some of their staff and their dependents from Tel Aviv to another location within Israel, stressing that their embassy continues to operate as normal.

The FCDO also "advises against all travel to Iran," warning that British nationals already in the country should "carefully consider" the risks of remaining there.

Authorities cautioned that British and dual British-Iranian nationals face a significant risk of arrest or detention, noting that "having a British passport or connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you."

The government also warned that travel insurance could be invalidated for those who visit despite official advice.

Officials cited a "heightened risk of regional tension," saying any escalation could lead to travel disruption and other unforeseen impacts.

British nationals were urged to take precautions based on their personal circumstances amid current security conditions.

FCDO further recommended against "all but essential travel to Israel and Palestine," and "all travel to parts of Israel and Palestine" such as Gaza, the West Bank and northern Israel.

" The situation could escalate quickly and poses significant risks. Regional tensions may cause international borders (air and land) to close," it said.
