UPDATE:Terrorist inmates at Indonesian prison surrender

More than 100 terrorists surrender following riot at maximum-security detention center

UPDATES WITH SURRENDER OF ALL TERRORIST INMATES

By Ainur Rohmah

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) - Terrorist inmates at a maximum-security detention center in Indonesia’s West Java province surrendered Thursday, ending a siege that began two days earlier with a riot at the facility that left five police officers and one inmate dead.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Wiranto, who goes by only one name, said that initially only 145 of the 155 inmates emerged and left their weapons behind after police threatened to attack them.

"They gave up unconditionally. No negotiations," said Wiranto as quoted by the Kompas.com news site.

But the other 10 inmates were not willing to surrender. Police then stormed the prison and fired several times.

"During the raid, the 10 remaining terrorists surrendered," he said, adding there were no fatalities during the operation.

The development came shortly after the armed terrorist inmates released a police officer who was among those it had taken hostage during the riot.

"Brigadier Iwan Sarjana has been successfully released,” National Police spokesman Inspector Gen. Setyo Wasisto said at a press conference earlier in the day as quoted by Kompas.com.

Sarjana was freed after midnight after police met a request from the inmates for food supplies.

"The release took place after negotiations. They asked for food, so we persuaded them to release [a hostage] first," said Wasisto.

He said Sarjana suffered injuries and bruises to his face and body and has been hospitalized.

Sarjana and five of his colleagues were taken hostage Tuesday night when a standoff developed into a hostage situation between inmates and prison officials at the National Police's Mobile Brigade detention center in Depok, which houses imprisoned Daesh militants.

The five officers were killed along with one terrorist inmate during the clashes.

Wasisto said a team of negotiators had been in talks with the terrorist inmates because they were in possession of several guns seized from police during the riot.
