US annual inflation slows to 2.4% in January, below expectations

Monthly inflation also below expectations, rising 0.2% compared to December 2025

ISTANBUL (AA) - The annual inflation rate in the US was at 2.4% in January, below market estimates, and down from 2.7% in December 2025, according to official data released Friday.

The markets had expected the annual rate to ease to 2.5% in January.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the monthly inflation rate was 0.2% in January, down from December's 0.3%, and also below expectations.

Food prices in the US rose by 2.9% in January on a yearly basis, while energy prices declined 0.1%.

The core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also eased, increasing 2.5% over 12 months, matching expectations.

Compared to December, shelter prices rose 0.2% in January, food prices increased 0.2%, while energy prices dropped 1.5%.

The consumer price index figures were at 2.7% in December and November, and at 3% in September.
