US: Biden sends senator to Ethiopia amid Tigris crisis

ANKARA (AA) - US President Joe Biden is dispatching Senator Chris Coons to Ethiopia to meet Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, according to the White House on Thursday.

Coons, once a top contender for Biden’s Secretary of State post, will travel to Addis Ababa and convey the president’s concerns about the humanitarian crisis, human rights abuses in the Tigray region and the risk of broader instability in the Horn of Africa.

The Democrat will also consult the African Union about how to advance the region’s shared interests for peace and prosperity, said the statement.
