WASHINGTON (AA) – A 19-year-old British man has been charged with attempting to grab a police officer's gun to shoot Donald Trump at rally in Las Vegas.
Michael Sandford appeared in a Nevada court Monday to be charged with committing an “act of violence on restricted ground” during a rally June 18 for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee at a casino.
"Sandford revealed that he made a conscious effort to come to Las Vegas to kill Trump," according to the court complaint that said the defendant tried to get the gun from an officer named as it was in an “unlocked position”.
"Sandford acknowledged that he would likely only be able to fire one to two rounds and stated he was convinced he would be killed by law enforcement during his attempt on Trump's life," the complaint added.
The court found Sandford dangerous and represented a flight risk and ordered his detention until his next hearing July 5.
"Sandford claimed he had been attempting to kill Trump for about a year but decided to act on this occasion because he finally felt confident about trying it," court papers said.
If convicted, Sanford faces more than 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the complaint.
