US Coastguard rescues 4 crew members from capsized ship

Fourth member stuck in ship’s ‘hot’ engineering room without food, water for more than 36 hours

ANKARA (AA) - The U.S. Coast Guard freed all four remaining crew members trapped in a capsized cargo ship off the Georgia coast, officials announced late Monday.

The Golden Ray capsized Sunday after a fire broke out with 24 crew members on board. The ship was carrying vehicles to the state of Maryland.

Twenty crew members from South Korea were previously saved, however, four others trapped in another deck of the vessel were rescued after being stuck for more than a day.

Rescue crews made contact with the four men Monday after hearing tapping noises early Monday. A hole was drilled into the ship to enable communication and provide ventilation. Inside the ship is "very hot, said Coast Guard Capt. John Reed, even hotter than the 92 Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) temperature off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia.

Three of the men were “relatively good,” given their circumstances, said" Reed.

A fourth member was stuck in the 656-foot (200-meter) ship’s engineering room without food or water for more than 36 hours.
