ISTANBUL (AA) – The US has conducted a Typhon missile test to sink a maritime target during Australia’s largest-ever military drills involving 19 nations.

The US deployed and fired the Mid-Range Capability (Typhon) missile on Tuesday as part of Australia’s biennial Talisman Sabre 2025 exercise, marking the first time the system was used outside the US, according to the US Defense Department-run Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.

"The deployment of the MRC and successful execution of an SM-6 live fire against a maritime target is another significant step forward in our ability to deploy, integrate, and command and control advanced land-based maritime strike capabilities," said Col. Wade Germann, commander of the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force.

Talisman Sabre 2025 kicked off on Sunday and is scheduled to run until Aug. 4.

The 11th iteration of the exercise is the largest and most advanced warfighting drill in Australia’s history.

More than 35,000 military personnel from Australia and partner nations, including for the first time Papua New Guinea, are planned to be deployed across Australia,

Papua New Guinea’s participation also marks the first time the exercise has been conducted beyond Australian territory.

The multinational exercise includes forces from the US, Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and the UK, with Malaysia and Vietnam attending as observers.

The event features live-fire exercises, field training, amphibious landings, ground force maneuvers, and air and maritime operations. It also showcases new Australian military capabilities such as the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and precision strike missiles.
