Fort Moore in Georgia changed back to Fort Benning, Pentagon says

By Diyar Guldogan

WASHINGTON (AA) - US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum Monday renaming Fort Moore in Georgia to Fort Benning.

"The new name pays tribute to Corporal (CPL) Fred G. Benning, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action during World War I with the U.S. Army in France in 1918," the Pentagon said in a statement.

"This change underscores the installation's storied history of service to the United States of America, honors the warfighter ethos, and recognizes the heroes who have trained at the installation for decades and will continue to train on its storied ranges," it added.

The base, which was originally named after a Confederate general, Lt. Gen. Henry Benning, was renamed Fort Moore in 2023.

Hegseth made a similar move last month to rename Fort Liberty in North Carolina to Fort Bragg after a World War II soldier and Silver Star recipient, Army Pfc. Roland L. Bragg.
