US downgrades status of Syria's UN mission: State Department

WASHINGTON (AA) - The Trump administration has downgraded the status of Syria's UN mission, the US State Department confirmed Thursday.

A State Department spokesperson said in a statement to Anadolu that Washington does not currently recognize any entity as a governing authority in Syria.

"The United States recently provided guidance to the Syrian Mission to the UN in New York regarding the visa classification of members of its mission. This administrative decision was made on the basis of current US recognition policy,” the spokesperson confirmed to Anadolu on condition of anonymity.

"The United States currently does not recognize any entity as the government of Syria. Visa classification depends in part on the United States’ recognition policy," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson stressed that there has been no change to the "privileges or immunities of the accredited members of the Syrian Permanent Mission to the United Nations."
