US House Ethics Committee launches probe into George Santos

New York Republican accused of ‘unlawful activity’ surrounding his 2022 congressional campaign

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US House Ethics Committee announced Thursday that it has launched a probe into Representative George Santos, who has admitted to lying about his background and faces financial probes over his congressional campaign.

The committee said in a statement that it will look into whether the New York Republican “engaged in unlawful activity with respect to his 2022 congressional campaign; failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House; violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm providing fiduciary services; and/or engaged in sexual misconduct towards an individual seeking employment in his congressional office.”

Santos’s office said he is “fully cooperating” with the investigation but avoided further commenting.

The newly-elected Republican congressman, 34, admitted that he had lied about parts of his resume.

Although his campaign biography said he worked for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, the companies denied any record of him working there.

Santos’ resume said he graduated from Baruch College in 2010, but officials there were not able to confirm a record of him attending the school.

He later admitted that he “never worked directly” for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup while confessing he never graduated from any college.
