US industrial production up more than estimates in January

Figure up 0.7% month-on-month, 2.3% year-on-year, while capacity utilization rate at 76.2%

ISTANBUL (AA) - US industrial production rose 0.7% month-on-month in January, exceeding expectations of a 0.4% increase, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday.

The increase followed a downwardly revised 0.2% increase in December, according to the Fed's report.

The industrial output was also up 2.3% annually, data showed.

Manufacturing production increased 0.6% for the month, following stagnation in December.

"Durable manufacturing output increased 0.8%, with gains in nearly all component industries, including increases of at least 1% in the production of nonmetallic mineral products, machinery, computer and electronic products, miscellaneous durable goods, and motor vehicles and parts, which increased for the first time since August 2025," the central bank said in a statement.

It noted that nondurable manufacturing output rose 0.4%, with mixed results among component industries: Gains in the production of paper, printing and support, chemicals and plastics and rubber products more than offset declines in the remaining industries.

Capacity utilization climbed 0.5 percentage points to 76.2%, below expectations of 76.6%.

The utilization rate was downwardly revised to 75.7% in December, according to the data.
