US lawmaker introduces bill to bar immigration agency from detaining, deporting Americans

WASHINGTON (AA) - US Rep. Pramila Jayapal announced she introduced legislation Wednesday to block Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from detaining or deporting Americans.

"The agency is completely rogue with zero accountability, kidnapping & disappearing people, including citizens, off the street," Jayapal, the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, wrote on X. "This is illegal and it’s time for Congress to step in.”

ICE agents are conducting immigration raids across the US as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.

The raids have led to widespread protests, most notably in the state of California, where Trump has deployed thousands of National Guard troops and US Marines to assist federal immigration officials in Los Angeles.
