US likely to replace its ambassador to Seoul before Trump’s visit to South Korea: Report

Donald Trump is expected to visit South Korea on October 29-30 for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit

ISTANBUL (AA) – The US will likely replace its acting ambassador to South Korea ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit to the country later this month, Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, citing diplomatic sources.

Joseph Y. Yun is likely to step down from his position by next Sunday, nine months after taking on the role earlier this year, the news agency said.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kevin Kim has been mentioned as a possible successor.

Yun took over as acting ambassador in January during the Biden administration, shortly before Trump took office.

Trump is expected to visit South Korea on October 29-30 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, according to South Korea's national security adviser.

During his visit, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is expected to meet with Trump.

Seoul and Washington reached an agreement in principle in July, with the US lowering tariffs on South Korean imports from 25% to 15% in exchange for Seoul's commitment to invest $350 billion in America.

But the two sides remain deadlocked on how the investment fund will be structured. Without a deal, South Korean imports could again face a 25% tariff.
